11 rising startups in India – Jan 28, 2017

Fresh Darjeeling tea for the world, low-cost digital X-rays, an Uber for trucks, a social network for moms, a wedding planner, SaaS, IoT, and a sports facility booking app – here’s an eclectic mix of 11 rising startups from India.

Vahdam

Vahdam Teas has raised US$650,000 from the Mumbai Angels Network, Singapore Angel Netwrk, and Fireside Ventures. The company has been shipping Darjeeling and other Indian teas to 76 countries. It aims to use the funding to get a warehouse in its largest market, the United States.

By packaging and shipping directly from plantations, and eliminating middlemen, Vahdam aims to make fresh Indian tea available around the world. “It is when I joined my family bulk export business, I realized that most of the teas being sold were reaching the consumers across the world 12 months after harvest on average,” says Vahdam Teas founder Bala Sarda. Another startup doing something similar is TeaBox.

SmarterHi

Pune-based IoT security startup SmarterHi has announced an undisclosed amount of funding from a Singapore investor. SmarterHi’s product Assertion is already in use at a global bank in Singapore, and the strategic investment is aimed at expanding in the hi-tech market. The Assertion product helps enterprises adopt a policy-based approach to communication systems security.

Tyre Express

Another emerging IoT startup is Tyre Express. Its product helps in the tracking and performance management of tyres. This enables a fleet operator to enhance tyre life, improve fuel efficiency, and reduce accidents. Tyre Express is also collaborating with manufacturers to enhance their service offerings to institutional clients.

RML AgTech

RML AgTech has raised US$4 million from IvyCap Ventures in a series B round. The startup uses SMS and its app to provide timely information to farmers on crops and markets. It also has an app for commodity traders to connect with dispersed farmers.

LetsTransport

Logistics startup LetsTransport has raised US$4 million in a second round of funding from NB Ventures and GMO Venture Partners, with participation of existing investor Rebright Partners from Japan. GPS-enabled trucks, status updates, transparent pricing, round-the-clock availability, customer support – LetsTransport brings Uber-like efficiency to trucking.

Betaout

Software-as-a-service startup Betaout has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from East Ventures. Betaout provides ecommerce companies with an all-in-one marketing software on the cloud. This ranges from analyzing visitors and building user personas to personalized multi-channel engagement.

The fresh funding will help Betaout expand in Southeast Asian markets, where it already has a presence. Tokopedia in Indonesia is among its clients.

Tinystep

Parenting social network Tinystep has raised US$2 million in funding from Indian ecommerce leader Flipkart. “Baby care is an important category for Flipkart. The investment will enable Flipkart to leverage Tinystep’s user community to build a network of influencers,” says Ram Papatla, Flipkart’s VP for product.

One of Tinystep’s early investors was Silicon Valley entrepreneur Matthew Glickman, co-founder of BabyCenter, which claims to reach 45 million parents across the globe every month.

Mother Diagnostic Systems

This Bangalore-based health tech startup has developed a digital X-ray that’s more affordable and also safer because it exposes patients to less electromagnetic radiation. Mother Diagnostic Systems has been chosen for a dev tech award by the UK government’s Tech Rocketship program.

Zolo

Zolo has raised US$5 million in series A funding led by existing investor Nexus Venture Partners. This round includes venture debt from Innoven Capital.

Zolo provides managed accommodation to young professionals near their offices. It is partnering with home-owners as well as large builders to provide fully managed accommodations.

Weddingz

Mumbai-based online wedding planner Weddingz has raised US$1 million from Singularity Ventures. Weddingz provides a range of planning aids, from booking wedding venues to finding service providers like photographers and makeup artists. The wedding-related services market is estimated to be worth US$40 billion in India.

Athletto

Bangalore-based sports tech startup Athletto has got backing from Facebook’s FBStart program. Athletto is out to prove sports isn’t just for kids. It helps people discover and book sports and fitness facilities, coaching services, and players.
